Mayra H. Lemos OnuchicBrasil@Rice Program Manager
Mayra’s passion for multicultural education (reflected in her experience as a bilingual elementary education teacher in San Diego) was forged by her own background in Brasil and fueled by her experience coming to the U.S. to earn her degree in Human Development and later her certification in Multicultural Bilingual Education. This experience allows her to share the excitement of the visiting international (and particularly Brazilian) students as they arrive to study here in the U.S.  Mayra’s training both in Brasil and in the U.S., along with her skill as an educator, make  her a great conduit to help foster the growing relationship between Rice and the universities in Brazil. In her role at Rice, Mayra travels back to Brazil regularly to meet with senior Brazilian administrators who help craft and oversee the many Brazilian educational programs.  Mayra delights in being a valued resource for the visiting Brazilian students (from undergraduate to post-doctoral level) and faculty; she works to help ensure that more and more Brazilian students will get to experience that same excitement of studying not just in the U.S., but here at Rice University – and that the Rice researchers and faculty also are aware of the collaborative opportunities available with Brasil. In addition to her duties at Brasil@Rice, Mayra and her husband Jose have been selected as Masters of Lovett College.
